![]() Linda Ronstadt, a die-hard Young fan talked about what makes Neil such a timeless artist when she said, in Jimmy McDonough’s Shakey, Neil Young’s biography, “ I would listen to Neil singing all the time we were on the road and I would think, ‘This is the future. After The Gold Rush had the spirit of Topanga Canyon.” So what has Neil Young said about my favorite of his albums, After The Gold Rush? In an interview with Cameron Crowe, he told Rolling Stone Magazine in the 1970s, “ But it all modesty, After The Gold Rush was kind of the turning point, was a strong album. ![]() I guess every verse has something different I’d taken.‘”ĭid you know that “After The Gold Rush” was based on a legendary script written by Dean Stockwell? Young read the screenplay and asked Stockwell if he could compose a soundtrack to the film that Dean described as being “ a sort of end of the world movie.” Well, Stockwell’s script has been lost but at least we have Neil’s reflections on wax. ![]() It just depends on what I was taking at the time. We asked him, flat out, what it meant, and he said, ‘Hell, I don’t know. So we called Neil Young, and he didn’t know. Parton explained when she said, “ When we were doing the Trio album, I asked Linda and Emmy what it meant, and they didn’t know. I know what you’re thinking, Neil didn’t write “After The Gold Rush” as an Olympic anthem, you’re probably right but I don’t think Young would tell you what “After The Gold Rush” is really about as Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris discovered while recording covering Young’s classic on their Trio II album. This year in London, for me, has been the most memorable of all the Olympics with the cornucopia of golden moments all sports enthusiasts everywhere will live to remember. A definitive highlight was cheering on our American athletes performing magnificently, winning with such grace and honor, making us proud while watching from home. The 2012 London Olympics have concluded and it’s time to revel in the glory of sport with Neil Young’s classic cut from his 1970 seminal album is the title track, “After The Gold Rush.” The first stanza of Young’s lyrics reflects to me all incredible greatness the world has witnessed for two weeks in Great Britain.
